Aurora is developed by Devon Lewis, but it stands on the shoulders of some excellent open-source projects and communities.

Aurora’s native engine for RPG Maker XP, VX, and VX Ace games is built on mkxp-z, an open-source reimplementation of the RGSS game runtime, itself based on Ancurio’s original mkxp. Huge thanks to the mkxp and mkxp-z contributors — Aurora would not exist without their work.

  • SDL2 — Cross-platform windowing, input, and audio
  • MetalANGLE — OpenGL ES over Metal on Apple platforms
  • Ruby — The scripting language at the heart of RGSS games, bundled in multiple versions
  • nodejs-mobile — Node.js on iOS, powering the desktop (nw.js) emulation in Aurora’s MV/MZ web engine
  • ogv.js — In-browser Ogg/WebM playback, bringing video support to MV/MZ games on iOS

Thanks to the Pokémon Essentials community and the many fan-game developers whose creativity drives much of what Aurora supports. Aurora is not affiliated with Nintendo, Game Freak, The Pokémon Company, or the maintainers of Pokémon Essentials.

Aurora uses a number of additional open-source libraries and frameworks. See Licensing & Attribution for third-party components and their licenses.
